Attractions:
Excursions from Chaltén
Most of the visitors of this town come attracted by one challenge the practice of mountain climbing, trekking and walking on some of the imposing granitic needles surrounding the village.
From December to March this paradise for adventure lovers attracts thousands of enthusiastic tourists. And the town's capacity is limited, so you must do a previous reservation or consult.
Mount Fitz Roy
This is the most appreciated peak by the lovers of climbing and trekking. The altitude is 3,405 m.
Its original name is Chaltén, that in Tehuelche dialect means "smoking mountain". This is due to a rare aeolic phenomenon that makes its top always appear as it was surrounded by clouds, which gives the mountain a smoking volcano look.
In 1877, the expedition led by Perito Moreno baptized it Fitz Roy, in memory of the sailor that explored the channels in Tierra del Fuego and the Santa Cruz river during the Charles Darwin expedition.
Not only experienced mountaineers can visit here, there are also paths for easy trekking that would take only 2 to 3 hoursas well as options to climb the "granite walls", with different degrees of difficulty.
Lago del Desierto
Taking route 23 and after 40 km. you will reach this lake that has been a subject of a now settled dispute between Argentina and Chile. Take your time, because this is a mountain road and will take you 2 hours to get there.
In spite of the isolation suggested by its name you will see landscapes of spectacular beauty: a tall wood of lengas and ñires (regional trees), of an intense green colour, with the permanent view of the Fitz Roy and Torre mountains, glaciers and waterfalls.
After 8 km. you will find the northern limit of the Los Glaciares National Park and at Km 13 you will cross a bridge over the Blanco River. On the right bank of the Eléctrico River, there is a path leading to the Piedra del Fraile shelter (if you want to ascend for 2 hours). If you want to reach the lake, then continue for 29 km. following Laguna del Cóndor and observe the imposing northeast wall of Mount Fitz Roy and you will be at the southern tip of Lake del Desierto. There are also options of navigation on the lake, you can take walks of different degrees of difficulty and you can also choose to spend the night in a camping area with all the services.
Lake Viedma
It is the first sight you have from El Chaltén coming through route 23 to the south, you will be able to follow the coast of this big lake. This huge light blue lake was discovered in 1782 by Antonio de Viedma. Its area is 1,088 km2.
With a length of 80 km. and width of 15 km. enjoy the west bank from where you will view mounts Fitz Roy, Torre, Puntiagudo and the majestic Viedma Glacier. You can also embark on a catamaran to navigate this lake and to get near the glaciers wall, one of the most beautiful experiences you can live in El Chaltén. There is also the option to trek on the glacier.
